Billings Sweeps WNMU Men and Women in Heartland Opener

Billings, MT -- Western New Mexico's basketball woes continued Wednesday as both the men's and women's team made their Heartland Conference debuts with losses at MSU-Billings. The women's team was overpowered 78-42, while the men's team made a game of it for the first 30 minutes, before Billings took control and won 122-97 after scoring 73 second-half points.

The WNMU men's team (0-9, 0-1 HC) controlled the tempo of the game for the first half and took a 51-49 lead to the locker room before the Jackets' Aussie import Carlin Hughes scored 18 unanwered points to give Billings control of the game at the 15 minute mark in the second half.

Hughes led all scorers with 33 points, but got considerable help from Cameron Muno's 29 and Moritz Wohler's 23 point efforts.

WNMU got senior Matt Enriquez back on track with 25 points on the night, and double digits out of three other Mustangs -- Trey Clarkson (19), Adam Grimes (18) and Casey Crevelone (10).

The Mustangs shot 41 percent in the game while the Yellowjackets blisterd the court with a 58 percent night.

The WNMU Women's team (0-8, 0-1 HC) were dominated by the Jackets as WNMU managed only 13 first-half points. Things didn't improve much in the second half as the Lady Stangs recorded 29 points but allowed Billings 41.
